7 hometown living at its best READY TO LEAD, CONNECT, & INSPIRE WRITTEN BY REBECCA SANCHEZ | PHOTOS PROVIDED BY KELLY ARNOLD Duncan Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Kelly Arnold brings rich background knowledge in business, networking, and communications to her new role.

8 duncan lifestyles magazine | hometownmedia.group SSettling into a warm welcome in Duncan, Kelly Arnold is excited to begin her new role as the Duncan Chamber of Commerce CEO and president because that means getting to do what she does so well, reaching out and bringing people together to tackle new ideas. After 20 years in Oklahoma City, Kelly and her husband Travis headed west when he announced his retirement from Oklahoma City-based Feed the Children. Though new to Duncan, Kelly was no stranger to chamber work, so she reached out when the opportunity presented itself. The former Duncan Chamber president had announced his own retirement and reached out to let Kelly know. She got the job and has been busy getting to know the chamber members, meeting its board, and making plans. Kelly’s story shows that she is familiar with cultivating ideas and watching them flourish, and that is all great news for Duncan. Her vision of success includes member-attended events with networking and businesses that not only grow but also make an impact on the community. Experiencing her family’s newspaper business, guiding high school students toward their endeavors, and witnessing two city chambers of commerce achieve awardwinning successes, she has seen hard work come to fruition throughout her life.

9 hometown living at its best “I came from a long line of journalists,” Kelly says. “I joke around that newspaper ink runs through my veins because my family owned our local newspaper in a small town called Atkins, Arkansas through most of my childhood. In fact, my great-grandfather was the second owner of the newspaper, then it was my grandfather, a great-uncle, and then my uncle with my mom as the managing editor… all those relatives owned the paper and worked in the newspaper business. My uncle was also head of the speech, theater, and journalism department at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Arkansas, and was my mentor. In high school, I was on the yearbook staff, and I was the newspaper editor my senior year. So, it was just kind of an understood thing that what I was going to do was journalism, and in college, I was the newspaper editor and a news anchor for our newscast.” From such an eye-opening perspective Kelly gained a keen sense for observing the movements and developments of a community. “When I was in school,” she says, “I helped my mom in the darkroom. I remember going in there and just being fascinated watching her develop her photographs. The paper did a special centennial issue when I was younger, and I helped my uncle with that. I would go out and take pictures and help, so I was kind of a roving reporter early on and it stuck.” It did stick, and Kelly went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in journalism. One of her best experiences and memories was interviewing former President Bill Clinton, who was governor of Arkansas when she was in college. After graduating, she was a videographer and training video producer at the nuclear plant in Russellville. Not an average workday for most, one assignment required a hardhat and climbing a cooling tower with her VHS camcorder slung over her back. Later, at CBS affiliate KTHV in Little Rock, Arkansas, she was a news producer, reporting, editing, doing video work, and putting together TV shows. Transferring communication skills from reporting to representing, Kelly joined the Tyson Foods marketing and public relations department, including work with nationwide foodbank donation activities. As a job highlight through the Tyson Foods partnership with the Great American Bake Sale, Kelly got to meet her favorite actor, the late John Ritter who played Jack Tripper on the “Three’s Company” television show.

10 duncan lifestyles magazine | hometownmedia.group After moving to Oklahoma, she added a new career dynamic in public relations as the director of marketing and communications and working with youth at the Chickasha Campus of the Canadian Valley Technology Center. “The Oklahoma career-tech system is remarkable. I was in charge of the student ambassadors program, and working with those students was probably the most impactful part for me. They came in as juniors, and they helped us recruit the new students coming in. I worked with them on public speaking skills, on how to communicate with their peers, and it was really a peer-driven recruitment tool. Seeing a junior that came in and didn't know anything, then seeing them as a senior confident, ready to take on the world, just made a huge difference to me, to work with those students and to see them thrive.” It was about this time that she was inspired by peers who were working on their master’s degrees. She enjoyed going to school and decided to hit the books too and pursue a graduate-level program. Kelly combined her experiences with her new credentials and entered the realm of chamber work. At the Norman Chamber of Commerce, and amid the COVID-19 pandemic, she helped facilitate the city-wide mask campaign by designing a series of digital graphics. The collaboration between the chamber, the Norman Visitor’s Bureau, and the City of Norman became an award winner. Similarly, while working for the Moore Chamber of Commerce, she was involved in their rebranding campaign and new website creation, another awardwinning, impactful experience. Having moved closer to Travis’s family in Duncan in 2024, Kelly and Travis made remodeling plans for their new house and moved her mother to the area with them. Along with her husband, Kelly is a golfer and enjoys big family gatherings with the four children and six grandchildren they share. The introduction between Kelly and Duncan has launched a great start to new developments, and she is enjoying getting to know more about her new town. “Duncan has a big heart,” Kelly says. “Everyone has been very embracing and welcoming to me personally and as the

new chamber president. It has impressed me that people really do care about each other here. It’s a warm welcome, and it’s nice to come to a community that is so accepting. I tell people that I think I’ve met more neighbors here in Duncan than in any other town I’ve lived in because they stop by, visit, and are interested in you. They welcome you to the community. The people and their big hearts have just been wonderful.” Kelly also brings with her the couple’s two Yorkies. “They're our babies, and I love them so much,” she says. She and her husband are getting to know the lay of the land, such as by exploring new restaurants. Duncan has gained two more friendly residents, and it has also gained a new chamber president with a rich background, solid skills, and a love for the role. † 11 hometown living at its best

S WRITTEN BY BECCA NELSON SANKEY | PHOTOS BY TONI HOWARD TONI HOWARD, A SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER AT DUNCAN HIGH SCHOOL, WANTED HER STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE SPORTS JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. ABOVE BEYOND AND Special education students often must work harder and differently to reach their goals, and their teachers are no different. Toni Howard, a special education teacher and Duncan High School Special Olympics head coach, is no exception. In 2017, after noticing that her students were not participating in extracurricular activities and seemed isolated from their school peers who didn’t have special needs, Howard began researching Special Olympics and Unified Sports. Unified Sports pairs special needs student, or athletes, with non-special needs students, called partners. “I started talking to my director at the time and said, ‘Why doesn’t Duncan High School participate in Special Olympics?’ and she said, ‘It's just a lot to take on; it's a huge process and there's a lot involved in that,’” Howard recalled. Howard wasn’t deterred. With her director’s blessing, she launched the nonprofit Unified Sports. “The main thing was I just wanted everybody to be able to have the same experience,” said Howard, who has two assistant coaches, Teresa Searcy and Laura Archer. “I knew how helping individuals with special needs made me feel, and I really thought that it would benefit the rest of the student body as well, that it might incorporate more of an inclusive setting at our high school.” Howard was right: Unified Sports, as the name implies, unites special needs students with high schoolers without special needs for support and encouragement. “I’ve gotten to witness friendships form and watch the athletes reach goals,” she said. “The partners are so happy and excited for them because they know that this is their chance to shine. It’s been neat to get to watch the whole experience unfold.” 16 duncan lifestyles magazine | hometownmedia.group

18 duncan lifestyles magazine | hometownmedia.group Howard recalled one senior who had cerebral palsy. She approached him and his family about being a part of Unified Sports, but they were concerned about his physical limitations. “I said, ‘Let's just try it. I really believe that he can do it if we make modifications and work with his ability.’” The student and his family agreed. “It was the first time that he actually got to be a part of a team,” Howard said. “To see the way his whole entire demeanor and personality went from being closed off to suddenly being so outgoing, and his constant smile and happiness, it was one of those moments that I was just like, ‘This is why.’” The student won a gold medal at state that year, Howard said, adding, “You would have thought he won a million dollars.”

19 hometown living at its best It was also special seeing the partners encourage him throughout the year, she said. “They'd be coming down the halls and they would talk to him and give him a high-five. Just to see his face light up in pure joy. He was getting to feel self-worth finally.” It’s also gratifying for Howard to see her students on the volleyball court or field playing like everyone else. “They're not reminded that they're different or that they have tons of stuff going against them,” she said. Toni’s 16-year-old daughter, Bailee, became a Unified partner this year and has experienced the rewards of the program from the perspective of a student. “I’ve seen multiple athletes break out of their shells socially,” she said. “At the beginning of the year they're just very quiet, and then finally you get to see them light up. They want to step on the court, they want to be a starter, they want to do things with this sport, they want to go out more and try things; even after high school they want to do more things with sports.”

21 hometown living at its best Bailee said it’s also been rewarding seeing her mom’s dream come to fruition. “When she actually got to step up and be a part of it all, I could see how happy it truly made her, and it just makes me feel so happy for her, seeing her doing what she loves.” Duncan High School athletes are never turned away from participating in the program, and partners can apply by contacting Howard at 580-860-4197 or email at toni.howard@duncanps.org. For more information about Unified Sports, visit their website at www.sook.org/what-we-do/unified-sports/ Unified Sports holds two major Special Olympics events per year as well as several smaller events. It is a nonprofit organization that is funded by individual donors and student fundraisers, in which Duncan merchandise such as hats and T-shirts are sold. To contribute to United Sports, look for their next fundraiser in Fall 2024. Checks may also be mailed to Duncan High School, with Unified Sports c/o Tony Howard in the memo line. †

22 duncan lifestyles magazine | hometownmedia.group INGREDIENTS Crumble Topping: • 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour • 2 tablespoons pure cane sugar • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter • 2 tablespoons whole milk Peach Filling: • 58 ounces canned peaches * • 2/3 cup pure cane sugar • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 tablespoon corn starch • 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon • 1/4 cup salted butter sliced PEACH COBBLER INSTRUCTIONS 1. Make sure your campfire is ready to go and your skillet lid is placed on the hot coals so it can heat. Your fire should be down to coals, with a little bit of flame here and there. 2. For the crust, combine the dry ingredients and set aside. 3. Combine the softened butter and milk. 4. Then add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring with a fork. 5. In a large mixing bowl, mix together the canned peaches, sugar, salt, corn starch, and cinnamon. 6. Pour the peach mixture into a cast iron skillet** and top with the sliced butter. 7. Crumble the crust topping over the entire peach mixture. 8. Once you have your tripod grill adjusted to the proper height, place the pan on the grill. 9. When the cobbler starts to bubble, place a heated skillet lid on top to create an oven-like atmosphere for everything to bake. 10. All in all, your cobbler will need to “bake” for about 45 minutes or until the crumbled topping starts to turn golden brown. You can place coals on top of the lid to help the cobbler bake through and through. 11. When the cobbler is done, take it off the fire and serve while it’s warm. NOTES * I recommend using sliced peaches in juice (versus heavy syrup). Also, I did not drain the peaches, though you may want to if you don’t want a more juicy cobbler. ** I used a 10.25” cast iron skillet. 28 duncan lifestyles magazine | hometownmedia.group WRITTEN BY SABRINA FORSE | PHOTOS PROVIDED BY CHRISTIANS CONCERNED Christians Concerned is putting God first in the grocery aisles.

29 hometown living at its best LLess than a year ago, Jessica Williams was a single mother of four children struggling to make ends meet. Now, she is using that struggle to help others who find themselves in similar situations. “I was in a financial bind and found help through a program called Temporary Assistance for Needy Families,” said Williams. Through the program, Williams started volunteering at a few different places in the area but when she came to Christians Concerned, she felt like she was home. “It’s an amazing place to go every day. I love helping families and helping to empower other single moms like me,” said Williams. Christians Concerned is a non-profit organization focused on assisting those in need. Their ministry focuses on compassion and generosity with the Bible verse Deuteronomy 15:11. It reads, “Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, ‘Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land.” Since 1969, Christians Concerned has been providing groceries to the food insecure in Duncan, Velma and Alma. An average of fifty families shops in the Christians Concerned grocery store each week. The organization also provides some temporary financial assistance. Kevin Lawrence is the Executive Director of Christians Concerned. Like Williams and the clients, they serve, he understands what it means to need assistance. “When I was a kid, I was food insecure. I can remember having to live off welfare and make scraps of food last,” said Lawrence. After serving more than twenty-years in the Army, Lawrence is now working on his master’s degree in non-profit administration. “Because of my military background, I’ve lost people and have also lost people to suicide. I am able to talk with and connect with some of those that come in for help. I’ve had some come back and just give me a big hug and say you’ve saved my life,” said Lawrence. “I am noticing that we are able to touch people in ways that I never would’ve thought a food pantry could.” The food pantry is located at 1005 S. 9th street in Duncan inside the former Stephans Methodist Church. There, the spirit of giving is demonstrated

every day. Donations come in each week through Homeland grocery store, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, churches and individuals. Lawerence and Williams sort those donations and stock them in a 990 feet square area of the building which serves as the grocery store. When you stroll the aisles, you’ll feel like you are shopping in a grocery store going from aisles for canned goods to hygiene products. “The former director had gone to a conference that showed when people are allowed to go shopping for themselves, it can help build self-esteem and self-worth,” said Lawrence. Upon arrival families will be given a list that matches the need for their family size. They receive a grocery cart and can shop at the Christians Concerned grocery area once every sixty-days. Volunteers are on standby in the aisles to serve and to pray with the families. “Our volunteers are wonderful people, especially those with the First Baptist Church in Duncan. They are always good at making everyone feel comfortable and will pray with anyone in need of prayer,” said Williams. Christians Concerned is praying that it reaches its goals as well. “We have a lot of goals with the building itself. We want to continue to clean it up and I’d like to get a glass logo with light shining through so we can be a literal beacon of light for the community. I’d also like to get a mural painted on the wall showing Jesus feeding the 5,000 with just five loaves of bread,” said Lawrence. Ultimately, Lawrence hopes they can expand their outreach to the regional level but is thankful for the support the food pantry has had from the community. “We have great volunteers that help in a number of ways. Some answer phones and conduct interviews for financial assistance. Some help do intake in the pantry, looking at IDs and updating databases. Others help clients with shopping.” Williams was one of those clients shopping through the aisles of Concerned Christians herself. Now, she’s using that experience to serve others. “I wear my heart on my sleeve, and I feel like I was put here in this space for a reason so I’m glad to help in any way I can.” † To volunteer or to learn more about Christians Concerned, call 580-252-9120. www.ccfpddunca.org if “Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, ‘Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land.'” - Deuteronomy 15:11 31 hometown living at its best

THE FACE OF JASON WELLS INSIGHT COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE BROKERAGE, LLC 41 hometown living at its best WHAT MAKES YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS UNIQUE FROM COMPETITORS? Insight Commercial Real Estate Brokerage, LLC has been in business longer than any other active brokerage firm in Southwest Oklahoma, focusing solely on commercial real estate. As the broker and owner of the company, I built the business from the ground up since its establishment in 2006. WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS INDUSTRY? This industry allows quality of life to be improved by taking undeveloped land or older properties that aren’t occupied and not generating income that can now be transformed into beneficial redeveloped buildings and shopping centers for the enrichment of the community. Additionally, being active in the national market and knowing how to find, recruit, and take a deal from concept to completion takes experience and the ability to network around the country. There’s nothing more rewarding in this business than taking a project where others have failed or were unwilling to think outside the box to get to the finish line with good results. WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE? Make it a habit to conquer risk early in life. Even though I was from a small community, I found that I could play soccer at the Div 1 level. I was told it was a waste trying to compete with big city boys. I tried football in my senior year getting a dual scholarship in both sports at Furman University. There was great risk to step up to pro football level as a kicker and compete with the best in the country where failure is all too easy to see. Had I not taken these risks, I would never have had these experiences or successes –some of which translate to my business life today. 580.353.6100 INSIGHTBROKERS.COM Commercial Real Estate 2024 FACES of Duncan

52 duncan lifestyles magazine | hometownmedia.group AArt exploded in Duncan this past July, that is the Chisholm Trail Arts Council held Arts Explosion at the Stephens County Fair and Expo Center, where children and teens enjoyed a week-long art program. The camp started out teaching children in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades in 1991. The popular program was later expanded, and a teen class was added along with kindergarten through 2nd grade. Now all grade levels are included. Cindy Parks has been a member of the Chisholm Trail Arts Council for numerous years and has held many positions within the organization. Cindy taught in Duncan ISD for 30 years. “I always tried to incorporate art into my lessons. It helped the students to retain what they were learning,” she explained, “A school counselor asked me to serve on the Arts Council board in 2007. I later became chair for the Arts Explosion.” Cindy also has stepped in to teach when an artist can’t make it at the last minute. She is devoted to the Duncan area and has held several positions within the CTAC, Art Smart and the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center. She is also in her fourth year as the chairperson for the Duncan Area Arts Hall of Fame.

This summer was her tenth year as chair, but she has been involved in one way or another since its inception. All three of her children attended the 3rd through 5th grade classes, and they are now in their 30s. Cindy still has art from her children’s experiences at their Arts Explosion’s hanging in her home. One of her fondest memories was when her son, Sam, had a class where they made digeridoos and had a performance with them. During each session, an art teacher brings high-quality art projects for students to work on and teaches them different types of media and art history. The classes culminate in an art show on Friday. Darcy Reeves, executive director of the Chisholm Trail Arts Council since 2012 said, “At the end of the week, we have all the art that has been created on display in a large room at the fairgrounds, and that is when we have our Friends and Family Reception. All the art that has been created is shown as a collective on display.” At the 53 hometown living at its best

Scholarships are provided by First Bank for children who are in financial need, so no child has to miss out for economic reasons. Walmart also sponsored Arts Explosion this year to help cover the cost of supplies for the week. There were new and returning art teachers this year that included Arlyn Brantley, an art teacher in Marlow, who taught pottery classes. “He is a really great artist and is so good with the kids,” Darcy said. Cash Wheeler came from Edmond and is a graphic artist by trade. Sharon Banks is a teacher at Empire Elementary. “She is well-educated in the arts and loves to do art with her students.” Jana Oakman is an artist, former art teacher, school counselor, educator and has her own art studio. Pam Ferguson was an art teacher in Texas for 40 years and was an awesome addition. Trey Hays is a teacher at Tishomingo and partners closely with the Chickasaw nation. Darcy met him at the Governor’s Arts Awards. Lacy Burch is also a teacher and currently works at the Marlowe Library. Lastly, Stephanie Jeffords from Pawnee taught the kids how to make dream catchers. From artful sounding performances and handmade instruments to eye-catching visual creations, Arts Explosion has something for every young student to learn and build skills, make lasting memories, and create heartfelt keepsakes. †

58 duncan lifestyles magazine | hometownmedia.group T WRITTEN BY JESSICA WESSON | PHOTOS PROVIDED BY EMILY PRICHARD The Prichard family bought land in Duncan in 1919, and now, more than 100 years later, their descendants are farming that same land. Emily and Luke Prichard moved to the property in 2017 after getting married, knowing they wanted a unique lifestyle for their future family. “We both had an interest in agriculture, though we’re not experts in it,” Emily said. “We decided to raise our son around agriculture on a working farm, so we started farming Luke’s family’s land that we lived on.” Emily’s background in agriculture prepared her to become a part-time farmer. “My dad worked for OSU Extension, so I grew up on farms picking strawberries, blackberries, pumpkins, and other things,” Emily said. “I spent more time at the county fairgrounds or in a field than in my home. I graduated from OSU with a degree in agricultural leadership with a minor in horticulture, which cultivated my interest in horticultural production.” They started small, planting ¼ acre of pumpkins in 2020, and moved on to other agricultural commodities. “I harvested about 200 Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins that year,” Emily said. “Then we re-fenced our entire property and bought cow-calf pairs. Our main goal was just to provide for our family by raising our own meat and potentially selling the excess to our surrounding community.” Over the years, Luke and Emily have added to their portion of the land, which now totals 42 acres. “We try to raise our livestock and crops in a more natural, regenerative way,” Emily said. “I got a grant from the Natural Resources Conservation THE PRICHARD FAMILY IS PRESERVING THE HISTORY OF FAMILY FARMLAND AND EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY ON WHERE THEIR FOOD COMES FROM.
