It’s both a thief and a gift. It drags by slowly and moves faster than the blink of an eye. As another school year has ended, I am a proud mother of a soon to be 7th grader and two almost 5th graders. How they aren’t still toddlers who get excited to see a big tractor or build a giant block tower, I don’t know. I am trying to enjoy this busy season of ‘big kids’ and remember these days are numbered and make them count. On the flip side, we are building a new home and time seems to move so slowly on the construction site! Seasons of waiting tend to feel that way. Whether you are in a time of warp speed or the seconds are dragging by, one thing is constant and true, we are not promised tomorrow. I am sure of my eternity through my faith in Jesus Christ. If you are a fellow believer, I pray you use your time on Earth pointing others to Him. If you are not, please know there is a hope bigger than yourself and current circumstances. We have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God and need a savior. Admit you need a savior, believe that savior is the perfect son of God, Jesus, confess Him as the lord of your life from this day forward in your remaining time on Earth, looking forward to spending eternity in His presence. In this issue we feature many Concho Valley residents using their time and talents to build community connections in all seasons of life from youth to golden years. Enjoy getting to know some of our many talented business women in this issue’s special section, Women of Influence, where they share community passions, advice from their challenges and successes, and how they juggle personal and professional time. 10 san angelo lifestyles | hometownmedia.group I Sherry Ann Talley had deep roots in San Angelo, but her reach went even farther. WRITTEN BY BECCA NELSON SANKEY | PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED BY TIFFANY TALLEY It is difficult to encapsulate the essence of a person in words – particularly when that individual is the late Sherry Talley. Talley, a lifelong artist and San Angelo native passed away in the summer of 2023, but not before leaving an indelible and colorful mark - literally and figuratively - on her hometown and the children’s camp in Connecticut for which she devoted 27 years of her life. Known for her quirky phrases and larger-thanlife persona, Talley passed from this life to the next with her daughter, Tiffany Talley, by her side, in what she likely would have described as a kumbaya moment (“kum” meaning to arise, “bah” to come and “yah” Lord); she often used the word “as a blessing …and sometimes a warning,” said her friend Jimmy Canton in the eulogy he wrote for her memorial service. Tiffany made a valiant effort to describe her mother, who – to her, her friends, and thousands of camp kids – was known as “Momma.” At the time of our interview, Tiffany, Director of Development and Community Relations at West Texas Counseling & Guidance, was in her office in the Cactus Hotel, where hundreds of people flooded last September to celebrate Talley’s life. The office, white walls adorned with vivid pops of art and a sprawling, hot pink desk reminiscent of the furniture in Barbie’s Dreamhouse, was much like Talley’s personality: whimsical and welcoming. Above Tiffany’s desk hung a large photo of Talley, coral lips set into a mischievous smirk, a pair of deer antlers in her hands – likely something she turned into an art project. Momma Talley's Legacy of LOVE

san angelo lifestyles | hometownmedia.group “She was doing acrylic (painting) on anything – canvas, paper, furniture, gourds,” Tiffany said with a laugh. “She’d paint anything and everything.” Talley had deep roots here, born from generations of San Angelo area natives, many of them artists. She taught at St. Luke Christian Child Development Center, was a member of the Junior League of San Angelo, and stayed involved with her Tri Delta sorority sisters from Texas Christian University. (She also later earned a degree in art from Angelo State University). Talley was 41 years old when tragedy struck and her 11-year-old son, Michael, died suddenly of a brain aneurysm. “I had just turned 15. It broke all three of us in half,” Tiffany said of her family. “Then it broke my family apart.” Talley’s marriage did not survive the tragedy, and she poured her grief into her art. When Tiffany moved away for college, Talley found healing some 2,000 miles away as the artist in residence for the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a free camp actor Paul Neman founded for seriously ill children. For nearly three decades, Talley spent four months out of each year at the camp. “She basically created the art culture for camp,” Tiffany said. “We started in 1989, the second summer camp was open, and so her impact was really significant.” Canton, CEO of the Hole in Wall Gang Camp, and a close friend of Talley’s, recounted in his eulogy how she would gently hold the hands of the camp’s children as together they shaped clay spinning on the wheel, transforming it into “something magical,” he said. “Her patience, gentleness, and desire to connect with our campers created joy and wonder.” “Sherry made people unafraid to pick a brush up,” added longtime friend Amber Alexander. “She made (painting) less intimidating. …where it was more about moving the materials around than the end product.” At camp, Canton said Talley and her “Sole Patrol,” as she called the staff, visited each cabin at night to rub the young campers’ feet. “Like Mary Magdalene, she was anointing each child’s feet with her love and care until they were fast asleep,” he said. “I am confident that she was silently praying over each child, invoking God’s healing, and inviting them to release their struggles, pain, and burdens.” Her health began to decline, and Talley and Tiffany both returned to San Angelo permanently in 2013, moving in together into Tiffany’s childhood home, where Tiffany was

san angelo lifestyles | hometownmedia.group her mother’s caretaker until her passing. Despite struggling with dementia, “it was a new season of art for her,” Tiffany said. “The art kept her in the present, sharpened her brain enough, and created an outlet in the midst of her confusion and anxiety. She could always come back to art; it was a central part of her soul.” Alexander, a San Angelo artist, met Talley in the ‘90s when Alexander, then a single mom, was working home interior projects to make ends meet. Alexander was painting cabinets while Talley painted magnolias as a border in the kitchen. “She was carrying this little basket, like an Easter basket, and she had this hat on,” Alexander recalled of their first encounter, adding that the ensemble at a job site caught her off guard, but in an endearing way. “The thing with Sherry is she would find something to compliment you on. It wasn’t disingenuous; there was no motive behind it. She would say, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re doing such a great job!’ She attracted people that way.” The duo would continue for the next several years to paint together as a team. “Painting can be a really solitary thing, so it’s nice to have company and someone who makes you feel good while you’re doing it, and makes you laugh,” Alexander said. Alexander said one of the things she misses most about Talley is being able to stop by her house unannounced, any time. “Usually she’d be painting something, listening to music,” Alexander said. “You’d go over there, and you could hear anything. She had quite the (music) collection. She was always happy to see you. You never felt like you were intruding or unwelcome.” Talley was warm even in her final days. “Before she died, she was connecting and telling people she loved them and how important they were,” Tiffany said. Mother-daughter relationships can be complicated, Talley added, but “the last 10 years were such a gift, and I have no regrets. We loved her home. I feel very, very blessed.” Smiling softly, her eyes welling with tears, Tiffany added, “It feels good to say that.” †

san angelo lifestyles | hometownmedia.group I Meleah Plummer was an all-star athlete and high school student when a rare brain condition nearly took her life. After enduring nine surgeries, Mel and her family are adjusting to a new normal, anchored by their faith. WRITTEN BY BECCA NELSON SANKEY | PHOTOS PROVIDED BY THE PLUMMER FAMILY FIGHTING by Faith It’s been more than two years since Chris Plummer’s oldest daughter, Meleah, nearly died from a brain hemorrhage, but he has yet to take off the now faded bracelets he’s worn ever since. One reads “Keep the Faith”; the other “#Miracles4Mel.” Miracles 4 Mel has become a trending hashtag on social media and has emblazoned San Angelo billboards as well as countless yard signs since Mel’s cerebral cavernous malformation diagnosis in 2021. “My son asked me the other day, ‘Why are you still wearing those bracelets?’” Chris recalled. “I said, ‘We go through a lot of things day by day, and sometimes they’re really tough. I look down and see those and see what Mel’s been through, and she tries 100 percent. That makes everything I face on a daily basis so little compared to what she’s going through.’” Faith has kept the Plummer family going since their lives were upended on Christmas Day 2021. Mel, then a 15-year-old athlete and student at Wall High School, had a headache Christmas Eve and woke up the next day vomiting. The Plummers likely would have shrugged Mel’s symptoms off as a virus had her brother, Mason, not been diagnosed with cerebral cavernous malformation, or CCM, just months prior. Her mother, Angela, also has CCM, which is genetic.

hometown living at its best

According to Penn Medicine, CCM causes clusters of blood vessels in the brain and/or spinal cord to create “caverns of slow-flowing blood.” The weak vessels can cause blood to leak into the brain and spinal cord. CCM, which affects about 1 in 500 people, can cause seizures, headaches, numbness or paralysis, and impair speech, balance, memory, hearing and vision. Angela was at the family’s Coleman ranch when Chris, who had pushed for a CT scan of Mel’s brain, called her with the bad news. “He said, ‘You need to get back; this (CM) is huge,’” Angela said, her voice cracking with emotion. “He said, ‘They don’t think she’s going to make it.’” But the miracles for Mel began happening right away. A Boston neurosurgeon experienced in external ventricular drains happened to be visiting Shannon Hospital; the Plummers credit him for being one of the first doctors to save her life. Once stabilized, Mel was transferred to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, where she spent two weeks before moving to Children’s Medical Center in nearby Dallas. There

hometown living at its best they saw pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Dale Swift, whom they had met before after Mason’s CCM diagnosis. Swift performed Mel’s brain surgery almost immediately. “It was so big they could only do one surgery first to take out the top half of the cavernoma,” Angela said. “There was a huge risk of catastrophic bleeding; two main arteries were running through this thing.” After waking from surgery, Mel did not speak for four days, and Angela and Chris had to physically hold Mel up to hug her. The emotional toll is almost palpable in a black-and-white photo Angela took of Chris in Mel’s hospital bed, her fragile frame curled against his chest. “As a dad, I feel it’s my job to protect my family, and when something like that happens and there’s absolutely nothing I can do, that’s when I felt like all hope was lost for me,” Chris said. “My faith was definitely tested. I actually went to the hotel room, and I just broke down, fell on my hands and knees bawling and crying, praying and asking God why he would do this to us.”

san angelo lifestyles | hometownmedia.group Minutes later, Chris received a phone call from a friend, who had been driving when he said God told him that He was using Meleah to bring people closer to Him. “I needed to hear that,” Chris said. “That’s what changed my whole perspective. Do I wish it happened? Not at all, but we’re going to do what God wants us to do with it.” The Plummers’ faith powered them through the difficult months ahead. Mel contracted a brain infection and had to have a shunt surgically implanted when it was discovered she still had a blockage preventing the drainage of spinal fluid. She returned home to San Angelo inpatient rehabilitation for 17 days, and, a few months later, underwent her second major brain surgery to remove the bottom of the cavernoma. The surgery resulted in double vision, which also required surgery. Life for the Plummers, including their grown son, Michael, 15-year-old Mason, 12-year-old Maddox, and daughter, Maylee, 9, completely changed. Mel, who played volleyball, basketball, softball, as well as running track and cross-country for Wall, had to give up sports and can now only attend school one hour a day due to resulting fatigue and heart "Do I wish it happened? Not at all, but WE’RE GOING TO DO WHAT GOD WANTS US TO DO WITH IT.” -Chris Plummer

san angelo lifestyles | hometownmedia.group issues. She also struggles with tremors, which she said are the most frustrating. “It has been so terrible; it dictates what I do in a day,” Mel said, adding that she also struggles with memory loss and has no recollection of the past two years. But she has one constant reminder: Strangers and friends alike know her story and care. “I think by day three or four on this journey, (the Wall community) were already having a prayer vigil out at the school. It was cold and right after Christmas, and so many families showed up to just pray,” Angela said. “There were a couple of benefits held for us at St. Ambrose and Riverside Golf Course. There were several schools that did fundraisers. The signs in the yard, and the billboards (that said “Pray for Meleah” or “Miracles4Mel), it was incredible. We had people all over the world praying for her.” Before Mel came home with a wheelchair, Northstar Construction remodeled her bathroom to make it handicap accessible – for free. “She needed a lot of assistance the first couple of months,” Angela said, adding that the renovation was “a huge blessing for us.”

hometown living at its best Mel still has remnants of the large cavernoma in her brain, as well as seven other small ones, all of which require a yearly MRI to monitor. There is no cure for CCM, but medical trials are ongoing to shrink the cavernomas and prevent new ones from forming. “If any of these grow or bleed again, she has to have surgery again,” Angela said. “All you can do is wait and watch.” When asked what keeps her going through the difficult days and the uncertain times ahead, Mel doesn’t hesitate with an answer. “Everybody around me, my parents, my siblings, my friends, everybody who’s been supporting me - people I don’t even know,” she said. “And God. God has been with me every step of the way. I know He’s with me, and I’m leaning on Him through everything I have to go through.” † Letters or cards of encouragement can be sent to: Meleah Plummer P.O. Box 2492 San Angelo, TX 76902
