MEDIA GROUP HOMETOWN H It feels so strange typing that out. I bought a shirt for a white elephant Christmas exchange that said, “Please be patient with me, I’m from the 1900’s”, and while it is clever and hilarious, the fact that we are 25 years into a new century blows me away (and makes me feel old!). As the cliches say, time really does fly. I remember hearing that before I had children of my own and always thinking it was one of those things people were obligated to say once they became parents. However, with my own family now, I fully realize that however cliché the phrases may be, time really doesn’t stop for anything, and every moment of our time here is special. Whether last year was the best year of your life and you got engaged or married, got a new life-changing job, welcomed new life to the world, or on the other side—it was the hardest year of your life and like my family, you lost a special loved one and life will never be the same, you went through marital or financial troubles or you faced an illness, disease or a silent, personal battle, my prayer for you is that 2025 brings you joy, happiness, health, resilience and unwavering faith. Our community is a reflection of those values, and as you flip through this issue, I hope you feel inspired by the incredible people who make it so special. This issue features our local Olympian, Taliyah Brooks, a group of women making a difference at Impact100, a spirited young entrepreneur, and don’t miss our Thrive in 25 feature—a special section packed with tips from local professionals to help you prioritize health and wellness not just in the new year, but all year long! 8 wichita falls living | hometownmedia.group WRITTEN BY SARA HOOK | PHOTOS PROVIDED BY THE BROOKS FAMILY SUCCESS through ADVERSITY Local Track and Field runner Taliyah Brooks represented Wichita Falls in the Paris Olympics.
9 hometown living at its best TThis year the world knew Wichita Falls, as locally raised professional athlete Taliyah Brooks competed in the Paris Olympics. It was a journey that took years for Brooks, but in the end, she triumphed as one of the premier athletes in the world with a rank of 11th in the Olympic heptathlon. Beyond that accomplishment, however, Brooks is an inspiration to all young athletes as a professional in her field and a model for perseverance. Growing up in Wichita Falls, Brooks attended several schools in the area before graduating from S. H. Rider High School. She and her four siblings were all very athletic, and were encouraged to excel in their chosen sports as a way to have a better life. “My dad wanted us to use sports as a way to get our college paid for,” Brooks said. “We needed to get an education, and track was just what I was highly recruited at. I also played basketball— I loved basketball, but I just had a lot more options with track.” Brooks chose to attend college at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, and in 2018 won the NCAA Division I championships in the pentathlon. The Olympics was always a goal, ever since she’d seen the event on TV as a child, and so naturally track became the method of achieving that goal. “For track athletes the Olympics is the pinnacle of our sport, it’s the highest thing that you can go to,” Brooks said. While Brooks may race several times throughout the year, heptathlons are her main event. It’s a competition that spans the entire range of Track & Field. Athletes compete in seven events: the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 meter dash, long jump, javelin throw, and 800 meter run. Excellence is demanded in every one of those competitions. Whether you make the team depends entirely on one event. It doesn’t matter how well you’ve done throughout the year, only whether you can show up on the day of the trials and get the job done. A single problem can set a candidate back years – something that happened to Brooks herself when she passed out from heat exhaustion during the 2021 Olympic trials. It was a difficult time, Brooks said, and she had to undergo a lot of emotional, physical and spiritual growth to be ready for 2024’s Olympic trials. “Adversity is bound to happen, at some point things are not going to go your way or you’re going to experience something that you don’t know what to do and you just have to push through that,” Brooks said. “You have to lean on the people around you to help you through that, and something better is on the other side.” “Adversity is bound to happen, at some point things are not going to go your way or you’re going to experience something that you don’t know what to do and you just have to push through that. You have to lean on the people around you to help you through that, and something better is on the other side.” - Taliyah Brooks
10 wichita falls living | hometownmedia.group Brooks did find success on the other side when she finished third in the 2024 heptathlon trials with a personal best score, earning a spot on the United States Olympic team. It was a relief, Brooks said, but most of all she felt proud for the people who stood behind her and supported her. “I was proud for my family, my coaches, everyone around me, for Wichita Falls because I know the people of Wichita Falls and the people in Arkansas have been behind me throughout this entire journey,” Brooks said. After the trials, there are six weeks when life goes back to normal. Athletes go back to their regular training and regular routine, something Brooks said was difficult to get through after the excitement of making the team. During the Olympic heptathlon itself she faced a similar slump, an injury in the first event slowing her down. Still Brooks pressed on, and said regardless of the result, she is proud of how she pushed through the two-day heptathlon. “There were times where I wanted to be down and I wanted to be sad about where I was placement-wise in the competition, but I would just look around and be like ‘look at all these people out here supporting you, you’re really at the Olympics,’” Brooks said. “I think overall I’m happy I finished, I’m happy I gave it my all, and I’m happy I really just took in the experience.”
11 hometown living at its best It is those experiences that have kept Brooks running, the chance to travel around the world, meet new people and experience new cultures. Her life is full of opportunities that wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for her work in Track & Field. Brooks plans to try out for the 2025 World Athletics Championship in Tokyo and is leaning towards trying for the 2028 Olympics, but ultimately is taking her career year by year. “I’m leaning towards going through 2028 but I am getting older,” Brooks said. “If the body is healthy and if I’m feeling good, I’m going to keep going.” Brooks’ career can be an inspiration to anyone striving towards the future. It is proof that it doesn’t matter where you come from, hard work and determination can bring dreams to life. “Take your journey for what it is,” Brooks said. “Enjoy the process and love the work – because you’re going to have to work to be successful.” †

15 hometown living at its best Written by Robin Cook | Photos by Randall Barker at RB Photography Fashion Night Out began in 2012 as a fundraising initiative for non-profit centers in the community. Since its inception, Fashion Night Out (FNO) has raised at least $80,000 each year the event is hosted (every other year)— with a grand total of over $560,000 raised for non-profits in over 7 years. The 8th annual Fashion Night Out, hosted on October 11th, raised $80,000 and included 534 attendees. This was a stellar year for the event. The Forum was dressed all white with a champagne entry. Audrey Leach of AUD Events presented a balloon ceiling installation of white balloons, streamers and stars. The stage was streamed in white with logoed décor. The commitment behind the event has always been to bring the community together for a night of giving, fashion and fun. Local boutiques participate in the runway presentation and 2024 showcased Annie Jewel and Charlies, The Containery, MIKS, and Regeneration— as well as a Couture presentation by Tangles Salon. The evening is an opportunity for local merchants to highlight the latest fashion trends and the audience gets the opportunity to see couture fashions fresh from the runway of Fall Fashion Week. Some statistics from a most recent survey include, 56% of clients say they would have a shortage of food without Meals on Wheels Wichita County deliveries. 59% of clients stated they would not have a hot meal noon without Meals on Wheels Wichita County. 89% of clients say Meals on Wheels Wichita County deliveries allows them to live independently and remain in their homes. At the end of the fiscal year, September 2023, Meals on Wheels Wichita County had prepared and delivered 208,160 meals. A total of 296,474 meals were prepared in our kitchen. More than 800 homebound seniors and disabled residents in our community depend on these meals and would face hunger without Meals on Wheels Wichita County. During FNO there are many opportunities to give. The participating boutiques generously supply a raffle item to be raffled at the end of the night. The live auction offered outdoor adventures, fashion and art, and entertainment packages, such as a Swifty Sleepover hosted by Annie Jewel and Charlies, or a Private Holiday Soiree with the winner receiving flowers for a year provided by The Flower Girl and Hors D’oeuvres by The Chef’s Palate in a private home setting. The live auction also boasted getaway packages such as a Whale Watching Excursion, Vip Seating at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and a Whisky tasting tour in Nashville. Other opportunities to give were through Fund A Need, providing meals for the homebound, seniors and disabled residents of Wichita County. None of this could be done without the support and generosity of the event sponsors, who make the event possible. Each attendee leaves with a SWAG bag full of goodies from boutiques, local merchants and help from global sponsors.

B WRITTEN BY CINDY KAHLER THOMAS PHOTOS BY AGU PHOTOGRAPHY AND PROVIDED BY THE HUTCHINSON FAMILY A YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR PUTS A FRESH TWIST ON THE BELOVED TREAT OF ICE CREAM. the Bee's Knees Bee's Rolled Ice Cream has quickly become a local favorite, particularly in downtown, where it can be found next to the Wichita Falls Brewing Company on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. What sets it apart is not just its uniqueness, but also its owner, Briady Hutchinson—better known as “Bee”. She launched her business at just fourteen years old and has been successfully operating it for three years now. “I was 14 and the pandemic was at its peak. I had more time on my hands just like everyone else, and I was looking at TikTok and all these videos of rolled ice cream kept popping up. I was intrigued because I had never seen the product before. We definitely didn’t have anything like it in Wichita Falls. I was excited to make it my own. A lot of places serve novelty items, but I didn’t just want a product that just looked good, but one that tasted good too,” Bee said, “So I thought, why not make it like a business and widen the scale?” Bee had always liked experimenting with food and baking and gave it to her family and friends, so making new recipes for the rolled ice cream came naturally. But first, she had to acquire the equipment. She accumulated cash from birthdays and holidays and decided to research small investments in the 21 hometown living at its best
22 wichita falls living | hometownmedia.group stock market. She eventually earned enough money to buy her first machine and found a business willing to let her have a pop-up business in their building. “I have been able to meet my bottom line and grow so that I could upgrade. Sadly, my first machine is no longer with us,” she said, “And now I have my own trailer with two brand new rolled ice cream machines.” Her favorite thing about the business is creating her own flavors. She has always been fascinated with experimenting with food and now with ice cream flavors. She loves it when people are happy about her flavors. “I love hearing the sentences, ‘We came for your ice cream,’ not just some ice cream but my ice cream, and, ‘I have been craving your ice cream,’ are the most uplifting comments I have ever gotten. It is such a compliment for people to tell me that when I have put so much work into coming up with the recipe. It has been exciting being able to serve people. I can’t say it enough!” she shared, “I love my customers, and anyone that comes up can tell.”
23 hometown living at its best
Bee is constantly rotating and changing the options on her menu. “I have the classics that include pistachio, cookies and cream, and peach cream which are my nostalgic flavors. Then I have new flavors like peach cobbler ice cream with a graham cracker crust, the peaches, the caramel, and the cream base. I take pride in thinking of new flavors and really like putting in the effort in. I wouldn’t put out anything that I wouldn’t like myself. It needs to come from the heart,” she said. Bee isn’t just a hard-working businesswoman, she is also a junior in high school, who is currently home-schooled and has been since the third grade. She enjoys working on her motorcycle with her dad. She is very creative, entering art in local art shows, and crocheting. She loves true crime and scary movies but often critiques the movies instead of being afraid of them. She loves hockey and rescue animals, and even volunteers at a veterinarian clinic. She likes to hang out with her friends and watch movies after school. “It takes a lot of motivation to keep going. But since I have been through all these changes with the new trailer and menu, I don’t have thoughts of just staying in bed today or not opening. Now I am excited to get prepared, to turn on the light, open the window and share with people my creations. The change of direction I am taking has been so wild. In the beginning, I was really overwhelmed because I started out so young. Now, I am continuing to grow. Now with my trailer, it is like a breath of fresh air. I am so excited to have my own place, something that I completely own.” Bee’s parents, Devonie and Garrett Hutchinson, are extremely proud of her. She is not only a business owner but also a role model who has shown extreme resilience and grit that comes with the process of building a business. This is a huge feat in itself , and so much more so since Bee has accomplished all of this at such a young age. † 24 wichita falls living | hometownmedia.group

BAILEE BURNETT photos provided by the burnett family 4-H SPOTLIGHT NAME: Bailee Burnett, 17 PARENTS: Matt and Shawna Burnett 4-H CLUB: Valley View 4-H Club WHERE DO YOU LIVE: Iowa Park, TX
29 hometown living at its best HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN 4-H PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS? I have been participating in 4-H competitions and projects since 3rd grade. I am a senior now so it’s my tenth year in 4-H. WHAT 4-H ACTIVITIES ARE YOU INVOLVED IN? Previously, I have competed in the food show, dog show, showing rabbits, and I currently compete in Ag. Product ID, Livestock Skillathon, photography, and show steers, heifers, and sheep. I have shown rabbits for 9 years, my 8th grade year I started showing heifers, and my junior year I added a steer, and this year I gave up rabbits to do sheep. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR 4-H PROJECTS? My favorite thing about my projects is the opportunities they have given me to learn more about the agriculture industry and meet new people. I enjoy getting to spend time with my animals and the most satisfying part is seeing the before and after, seeing what all my hard work has turned into. My least favorite part is letting them go at the end of the year. HOW HAS BEING A PART OF 4-H PROGRAMS PREPARED YOU FOR YOUR FUTURE/GOALS? 4-H has prepared me for my future by teaching and instilling important values such as responsibility, time management, patience, and hard work. Through the many hours of preparing for competitions and participating in community service events, 4-H has also taught me the importance of dedication and what it means to give up some of my own time to help others. 4-H has prepared me for my future career by allowing me to learn about plants, fruits, vegetables, and a little about crop production, which is what I plan on pursuing. ARE YOU AN OFFICER? IF SO, WHICH POSITION? Currently, I am the Treasurer of the Valley View Club but have also been the Secretary, County Delegate, and Parliamentarian. I am also an FFA officer. I am the Iowa Park Chapter Treasurer and a Wichita District Vice President.
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE THINKING ABOUT JOINING 4-H TO PERSUADE THEM TO JOIN? I would tell them that it is worth it. I used to be pretty shy and would barely talk, let alone speak in front of anyone. However, competing in events where you have to talk to the judge, and running for an officer position have improved my speaking and leadership skills tremendously. Also, there is something for everyone from food challenge to fashion show to archery to stock shows… there are so many competitions and ways to get involved. WHO IS YOUR MENTOR? There are so many people who have given me help and guidance over the years and it is hard to pick just one. My extension agent, Katrena Mitchell, is selfless and I have truly enjoyed working with her throughout the years. My ag teachers have all been amazing and I learned the love of the greenhouse from Mrs. Scharbrough. Miss Oates has helped me along the way with my cattle. Mrs. Sid and Mr. Fischer are currently helping me learn how to care for and show my lambs. I have many mentors and people who have helped me along my journey. I love this and love learning from different people. 30 wichita falls living | hometownmedia.group

I am also in the National Honor Society (NHS) and very active in the Iowa Park FFA chapter. WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE AND WHAT WILL YOU STUDY? After I graduate, I will be going to school at West Texas A&M and I plan on majoring in plant science. I will use my degree to do research on crops and work to improve crop production. TELL US A FUNNY STORY ABOUT SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED WHILE CARING FOR YOUR ANIMAL OR DURING A COMPETITION. There have been so many fun experiences, but my favorite one is from district Ag. Product competition last year. It was such a long day since my team competed in both Ag Product and Livestock Skillathon and the results took forever to come out. We ended up being the first-place senior team for Ag. Product and got ice cream to celebrate. We were so tired we were laughing at everything. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES/INTERESTS? I have little spare time during the school year and show season but over the summer there is enough time for me to try different things. I enjoy being creative and have tried out crochet, macrame, embroidery, jewelry making, painting, sewing, and my favorite, photography. Luckily, I have many opportunities to take pictures for my chapter and friends, so photography is a year-round hobby of mine. COMMENTS/WORDS OF WISDOM OR ADVICE: Take chances and try new things. AAs we look toward a healthier future, maintaining a strong, resilient heart is essential for thriving in 2025 and beyond. Cardiovascular health, or the health of your heart and blood vessels, is a crucial aspect of overall well-being. Diseases of the heart and circulation remain the leading cause of death globally, but the good news is that many heart conditions are preventable with small, impactful lifestyle changes. Taking proactive steps to maintain heart health can significantly reduce the risk of more serious conditions later on. By focusing on diet, exercise, and regular check-ups, you can truly optimize your cardiovascular health. Simple Ways to Boost Your HEART HEALTH 38 wichita falls living | hometownmedia.group
39 hometown living at its best Advice for Optimal Heart Health The heart is resilient, but it thrives when given the right care. Here are some simple, everyday changes you can make to optimize your cardiovascular health: 1. Adopt a Heart-Healthy Diet Eating foods rich in fiber, healthy fats, and antioxidants can protect your heart. Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats (like those found in olive oil, avocados, and nuts). Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fishlike salmon and mackerel, have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. Reducing salt intake can also help manage blood pressure. 2. Get Moving with Regular Exercise Physical activity strengthens the heart muscle and improves blood circulation. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each week, such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling. Even simple activities like gardening or taking the stairs can make a difference. 3. Manage Stress Chronic stress can harm your heart by increasing blood pressure and raising levels of inflammation. Try practicing mindfulness techniques, yoga, or meditation to help reduce stress. Engaging in relaxing hobbies and getting enough sleep are also crucial. 4. Quit Smoking and Limit Alcohol Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption significantly increase the risk of heart disease. Quitting smoking can drastically lower your risk of heart attack and stroke. Limiting alcohol intake can also reduce the strain on your heart. 5. Monitor Your Health Regular check-ups are key. Monitoring your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar can help catch potential issues before they become serious. If you have a family history of heart disease, be sure to discuss this with your healthcare provider. Small Changes, Big Impact As you embark upon this new year, making mindful choices to care for your heart today will set the stage for a healthier tomorrow. 40 wichita falls living | hometownmedia.group IF YOU COULD ONLY GIVE ONE TIP OR PIECE OF ADVICE FOR A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE THIS YEAR, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Limit Carbs and Carbonated drinks! Soft drinks and candy have long been known to increase dental decay. In addition, we also advise limiting consumption of breads, pastas, sports drinks and other carbonated drinks containing sugar. Elevated sugar and acid levels in the mouth are an ideal environment for decay and cavities to occur. Simple ways to combat cavities are rinsing your mouth after meals, chewing sugar free gum with xylitol to stimulate saliva, and using a fluoridated toothpaste to help prevent decay. WHAT RESOURCES OR TOOLS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR PEOPLE ON THEIR WELLNESS JOURNEY? Prioritize daily Brushing and Flossing! Research indicates a significant link between gum disease and various systemic health issues including heart disease. Our “Go-To” home care recommendations for combating gum disease and cavities include using an electric toothbrush for plaque and bacteria removal, along with floss and water flossers to help remove food debris and bacteria that harbor below the gums, crowns and bridges and around orthodontic brackets. These simple tools take just minutes daily and are essential for your overall health, wellness AND pocketbook! 42 wichita falls living | hometownmedia.group MMy story began when a lung injury landed me in the hospital in 2020. I was hit with drugs, scans, blood tests, specialists, unanticipated surgery, and treatment that ultimately did more harm than the original injury. My pulmonologist described it as a catastrophic health event, and I couldn’t tolerate the drugs that I was told were my only hope for healing. Instead, I lost significant weight and was no longer thriving. Fortunately, I was saved from my pit of infirmity by homeopathy. Not only was my lung capacity restored, but many other acute and chronic conditions were eliminated under the treatment of a skilled homeopathic practitioner. Within a year of using remedies, I eliminated virtually all my prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. Based on these experiences, I knew I had to spread the good news of homeopathy. HOMEOPATHY for a Healthier Life Written by: Johnelle Donnell
Homeopathy originated in Germany in the late 1800’s and is the second most used medicine in the world, but in the US, with its “wonder drugs,” pharmaceuticals successfully displaced homeopathy in the early 1900’s. By the 1950’s, only a few homeopaths remained, and all the homeopathic medical schools and hospitals closed. Homeopathy had essentially been cancelled. The dangerous side effects of those “fast-acting” drugs were not yet known, and bacteria had not become resistant to drugs. After the world endured COVID, and we proved by our morbidity rates that Americans are indeed among the sickest on the planet, it became obvious that the US had a fractured healthcare system. Homeopathy changes the body’s terrain using the “law of similars” so it can heal itself. For instance, an onion in its natural state will cause tears, a drippy nose, and sneezing, so a homeopathic remedy made from the red onion is used to treat a person experiencing similar symptoms. The concept was first mentioned by Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, in the 4th century BC. In quantum physics two identical particles cannot simultaneously occupy the same quantum state within a system. In the preparation of homeopathic remedies, tinctures from natural substances are prepared in such a way as to release their energetic power. Rather than countering disease with antibiotics, antidepressants, antihistamines or diuretics with their predicted side effects, homeopaths choose a remedy that is safe and doesn’t cause side effects to match unique symptoms, and the body’s terrain is corrected. Homeopathy is safe, gentle, effective, and the fastest growing form of medicine in the world. With its personalized treatment plans and emphasis on treating the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—homeopathy should be welcomed back into our country as a viable and complementary healthcare option. Its revival could help many seek a more natural, sustainable path to healing and overall well-being. Johnelle Donnell attends advanced homeopathy classes in the UK remotely, teaches bi-annual beginner home prescriber classes at the Museum at MSU Texas, and has participated in the production of a documentary, “Introducing Homeopathy,” soon to be released on Netflix.

46 wichita falls living | hometownmedia.group AAs we step into 2025, improving your nutrition is one of the most impactful ways to boost your overall well-being and optimize your health. Proper nutrition is the foundation of a strong body and mind, influencing everything from energy levels and mood to immune function and longevity. Whether you’re looking to manage your weight, improve your mental clarity, or simply feel better day-to-day, small dietary changes can help you thrive in the year ahead. Simple Tips to Written by: Sarah Little, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with United Regional Health Care System OPTIMIZE YOUR NUTRITION in the New Year
47 hometown living at its best What Is Good Nutrition? Nutrition refers to the intake of food that is necessary for health and growth. It involves consuming the right balance of macronutrients — proteins, carbohydrates, and fats — as well as micronutrients like vitamins and minerals. Eating a variety of nutrient-dense foods helps fuel your body, supports cellular repair, and strengthens your immune system. Nutrition is an important part of health, so you should take steps every day to learn about the foods you’re eating. One way you can do this is to always look at the nutrition label before purchasing or consuming a food item. The nutrition label is a reliable source of nutrition facts since it is regulated by the FDA, and therefore can help you make accurate, informed decisions for your health. How Can You Improve Your Nutrition in 2025? You don’t need to make drastic changes to improve your diet. Incorporating a few simple, sustainable habits can have a big impact on your health: 1. Eat a Rainbow of Fruits and Vegetables Aim to fill half of your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables. These foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which help protect your cells from damage and fight inflammation. 2. Prioritize Whole Grains Over Refined Carbs Whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, and oats are rich in fiber, which supports digestion and helps regulate blood sugar levels. Switch out refined grains, like white bread or pasta, for whole grains to improve energy levels and maintain a healthy weight. 3. Include Healthy Fats in Your Diet Not all fats are created equal. Healthy fats, like those found in avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, are essential for brain health, hormone regulation, and keeping your skin glowing. Aim to replace saturated fats (found in fried foods and fatty cuts of meat) with unsaturated fats to support heart health. 4. Stay Hydrated Water is essential for nearly every bodily function, from digestion to temperature regulation. Aim to drink at least eight cups of water a day, and more if you’re active. If plain water feels boring, add a splash of lemon or cucumber for flavor. 5. Practice Portion Control Eating mindfully and listening to your body can help you avoid overeating. Try using smaller plates to naturally reduce portion sizes, and take time to savor each bite. It’s not about restriction, but rather balance and enjoyment. Small Changes, Big Impact Incorporating these simple nutrition tips into your daily routine can have lasting benefits for your health and well-being. As you embrace these habits in 2025, you’ll not only feel better but also set yourself up for long-term success. With consistent, mindful choices, you’ll optimize your nutrition and truly thrive in the year ahead.
